𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗼 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗼 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴

Parvovirus is not like a common cold. It is a highly aggressive virus that targets the most vital, rapidly dividing cells in a dog’s body, primarily in two key areas: the intestines and the bone marrow.

𝟭. 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 (𝗚𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻)

The virus destroys the protective cell lining of the intestines. This leads to a catastrophic breakdown of the gut’s ability to absorb nutrients and retain fluid.

• 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀: Your dog experiences relentless, violent, and painful vomiting and diarrhea, which is often bloody and has a distinct, foul odor.

By attacking the bone marrow, Parvovirus destroys the cells responsible for creating white blood cells—the crucial component of the immune system.

• 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁: This leaves your dog’s immune system virtually defenseless. Bacteria from the damaged gut lining leak into the bloodstream, causing widespread, life-threatening septic shock.

• 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀: Profound lethargy, extreme weakness, and total loss of appetite are hallmarks of this systemic collapse. Your dog feels miserable and critically ill.

Parvo is a rapid, often fatal disease, particularly in unvaccinated puppies.

• 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Parvovirus is highly resistant to heat, cold, and many common disinfectants. It can survive in soil, on contaminated clothing, shoes, and kennel floors for 𝘀𝗶𝘅 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿.

• 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: A puppy doesn’t need to meet an infected dog to catch it. They can pick up the virus simply by walking or playing in a contaminated area—like a park, sidewalk, or even your own backyard if an infected animal or person has recently been there.

Given that we have treated three active cases recently, we must stress that the virus is 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮. If your dog is not fully vaccinated, they are at significant risk of contracting this deadly disease.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲-𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴

The good news is that we have a powerful tool to fight Parvo: the vaccine. The Parvo vaccine is a 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 for dogs, meaning it is considered essential for all dogs regardless of their lifestyle.

At Lone Tree Animal Care Center, we include Parvo protection in the standard 𝗽𝘂𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 (DAPPC—which covers Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, and often Leptospirosis).
